Step 2: Export Gradebook as CSV

Keep the default “Gradebook as CSV” option and click Next

Step 3: Drag the file from the downloads bar into Frontline SIS

Click and drag the file from the downloads bar into a blank area on the Frontline SIS gradebook. Let go of the mouse and the file will automatically be detected.

Tip: Open Frontline SIS in a separate tab within the same Chrome window.

Alternatively, click “Choose File” and select an a different file on your computer

Step 4: Choose assignments to import

Teachertools will inform you if assignments were found in the file that were not in Frontline SIS.
Note: The Schoology export file contains a lot of additional information other than your current assignments. This includes overall and category grades and assignments from previous grading periods. These will be interpreted by Teachertools as assignment names. However, since those assignment names will not be detected in Frontline SIS they will be ignored and will not be imported.

Blank cells will be ignored by default so as to not overwrite any manually updated grades in Frontline SIS. Uncheck this box if you want blank grades in the file to overwrite existing grades in Frontline SIS.

Emojis in assignment names will be ignored. Learn more

Step 5: Watch and verify

The progress bar will update showing the current progress of the import.
Verify grades transferred correctly.

Step 6: Save

Save your updated grades and repeat for your other sections in Frontline SIS.

Deep Dive into the Schoology Export File

SchoologyExportFile.png

The Schoology export file has three main sections:

Student Information

  • Teacher tools uses Columns A-C headers to detect a Schoology file. The headers must match:

    • First Name

    • Last Name

    • Unique User ID

  • Teachertools uses the Unique User ID column to match with the Frontline SIS Local ID.

  • Teachertools also requires that the filename contains “gradebook-export” to verify it is a Schoology export file.
(“gradebook-export.csv” is the default filename from Schoology)

Statistics

  • Schoology will add statical information based on assignment categories such as:

    • Overall Score

    • Scores for assignment categories and grading periods

    • and more…

  • These columns are interpreted by Teachertools as assignment names but will not be found in Frontline SIS when you import your grades.

  • Because they won’t be found in Frontline SIS you can ignore them. You do no need to delete them.

Grades

  • Columns H and onward hold the Assignment and Grades information

  • Assignment names are in Row 1

  • Assignment names have additional information in parenthesis (Due Date, category, etc). This additional information is ignored by Teachertools.
Note: Because this additional information is ignored, an assignment with two due different due dates will be interpreted as two assignments with the same name. You will receive a “Duplicate Assignment Name” error when you try to import grades.

  • Numeric grade values are passed directly into Frontline SIS

  • Non-numeric grade values of “-” are passed to Frontline SIS as a blank

  • Non-numeric grade values of “Excused” are passed to Frontline as “EXC” or “EXE” depending on school district.

  • Non-numeric grade values of “Missing” are passed to Frontline as “MSG” or “INC” depending on school district.

  • Non-numeric grade values of “Incomplete” are passed to Frontline as “I” or “INC” depending on school district.
